Educating and Empowering Women in Sierra Leone
Search for Common Ground (sponsor)
Women are generally overlooked in Sierra Leone, with girls
and womens education being a low priority for families. As
a result, little economic, social or political opportunity is available
to them, giving them no avenue for participation in civil society.
This education fund will supplement the tuition costs of girls and
women seeking to finish their secondary schooling and pursue post-secondary
education opportunities, preparing them for to contribute to their
nations development. This project will support womens
efforts to improve their skills and further their education by supplementing
their tuition costs. Recipients will pursue courses that prepare
them to play a role in the economic, social, and political development
of Sierra Leone. With education, women can better engage in dialogue
and constructive development of the nation, thereby allowing them
to play a significant role in bringing peace to their country. The
project currently needs $11,000 to run; to contribute and/or learn

Emergency Relief to Innocent Victims
Africare has provided emergency humanitarian
aid to the innocent victims of civil war in Sierra Leone since 1991,
when the violence began. Aid has focused on the Eastern and Southern
provinces, at camps where war-displaced people have fled. "The
camps each contain as many as 30,000 people, huddled in makeshift
mud-brick, plastic and thatched huts," reports an Africare
field worker. Africare gives medical aid to mothers, fathers, children
and the elderly, who often arrive at the camps exhausted, malnourished
and ill. Click
