Statement on Human Rights Day
Human Rights for Women <-> Human Rights for All: UDHR 60
Human Rights Day, December 10, marks the end of the 2007 16 Days
of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign and the beginning
of the year leading up to the 60th anniversary of the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR 60).
The Center for Women’s Global Leadership is committed to
the realization of human rights for all, with a focus on the rights
of women, and is pleased to announce its participation in the
global 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights: Reclaiming the UDHR Campaign. With the slogan, Every Human
Has Rights, different organizations around the world with the
support of The Elders will lead in highlighting key aspects of
the human rights framework each month and call for a worldwide
commitment to realizing human rights.
In the month of March, and using International Women’s
Day as an anchor, CWGL will take the lead on highlighting a spectrum
of women’s human rights issues and the importance of women’s
leadership in realizing human rights for all. As part of this
campaign, activities highlighting Human Rights for Women <->
Human Rights for All will begin 1 March and culminate with the
16 days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign 2008 (25
November to 10 December).
It has been increasing realized by governments, civil society,
and multi-lateral institutions that ensuring women’s full
equality and participation in society is one of the most effective
ways to build a just, peaceful and sustainable world where human
rights for all are respected. During the month of March, groups
everywhere are encouraged to take up activities that address the
human rights challenges facing women around the globe and to celebrate
the power and leadership of women in defending human rights.
We also call on those planning events for March 8th, International
Women’s Day and/or for March as Women’s Month, to
include the UDHR and its importance for women in your activities.
CWGL and the overall 60th anniversary campaign will feature suggestions
for this focus on our website in the coming months.
