Support ratification of CEDAW Treaty

Dear Colleague:

As you may have heard, Senators Biden and Boxer are planning to announce hearings for the Treaty for the Rights of Women or CEDAW - the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women. The hearings are likely to be held in mid-June. Word is quickly spreading among right-wing groups and phone calls are coming into the White House against the Treaty.

President Bush has not yet made a decision on their position; the next two weeks are critical. They need to hear from supporters as a balance to the opposition targeting the White House comment line.

Given what Mrs. Bush has been doing on Afghanistan, there is a possibility that the Administration could decide to support - or at least not oppose - ratification of the CEDAW Treaty.

If you have a free moment, could you please call the White House switchboard at 202-456-1111.

Leave a message that you support the CEDAW Treaty for the Rights of Women and urge the President to do so. In addition, a new website has been developed:

www.womenstreaty.org

The website has an ACTION NOW button to send emails to the Senate, White House and State Department along with background information. The coalition would also appreciate your sending an email urging friends and colleagues to call the White House ASAP.
