International Peace Bureau: Committe of Soldiers' Mothers of Russia
The Committee of Soldiers' Mothers of Russia (CSMR) was founded in 1989 by 300 mothers of students called up for military service in the middle of their studies. Their successes include the early return of 180,000 students from the army to restart their studies, important improvements for Russian soldiers such as life and health insurance and pay increases, and the right to civilian service. The Mothers have assisted over 7,000 deserters and their parents. Demonstrations have been held in many Russian cities against the militarization of society and against human rights violations in the army. For more information, click on CSMR.
