East Africa
Within this sub-region, PeaceWomen is currently monitoring 5 countries (Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Sudan, Uganda). Eastern Africa is home to countries of low (Kenya 128-Ethiopia 157) levels of human development, in addition to countries with ongoing conflict. According to the Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI,) countries in Eastern Africa rank from 33 (Uganda) to 121 (Ethiopia).
Currently, there are two Peacekeeping missions in this sub region, the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) and the United Nations Mission in the Sudan (UNMIS).

A U.S.-based group of physicians on Tuesday released medical evidence of widespread torture, sexual assault and other human rights violations against civilians in Sudan's conflict-wracked Darfur region.
The study was released by the group Physicians for Human Rights in the peer-reviewed Internet medical journal, PLoS Medicine.
