Western Sahara has a population estimated at 260,000 with an area of 252,120 sq km (97,344 sq miles). The main town is Laayoune. The major language is Arabic.

Western Sahara is the subject of a decades-long dispute between Morocco and the Algerian-backed Polisario Front. The region has been under Moroccan control since 1976. However, the Polisario was set up on May 10, 1973 and established itself as the sole representative of the Saharan people. Polisario led a guerrilla war against Moroccan forces until 1991. Some 100,000 refugees still live in Polisario's camps in Algeria.
