South Africa
South Africa has a population estimated at 50.1 million (UN, 2009) with an area of 1.22 million sq km (470,693 sq miles). The capitals are Pretoria (executive capital), Cape Town (legislative capital) and Bloemfontein (judicial capital). South Africa has 11 official languages including English, Afrikaans, Sesotho, Setswana, Xhosa and Zulu.
Until 1994, South Africa was ruled by a white minority government and an apartheid regime. Reform in 1994 marked a change in governance for the nation. However, high levels of violence against women continue to be reported.

Seven children under the age of 14 were being raped in Soweto in a day. Nearly 30 children were being raped every month. More than 100 were raped over the four months before we cast our first democratic vote in April 1994, leaving then-Soweto police spokesman Joseph Ngobeni to say: “We can't go on like this.”

Over the past decade there has been a trend in many countries of creating space for the role that men can play in ending gender-based violence. South Africa has also seen a steady increase of organisations that seek to answer this complex question by engaging in various strategies. These include introducing us to the "new man in town", an embodiment of positive and progressive masculinity, and beginning conversations with men about how they can help to end violence against women.

The bishops of Southern Africa have appointed Sister Hermenegild Makoro as the new Secretary- General of the Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference. She will replace Fr Vincent Brennan SMA who is to retire in March.
