Central America is home to countries of high (Panama 54) to medium (Guatemala 116) levels of human development, in addition to many emerging post- conflict countries. According to the Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI), Guatemala ranks at 109, El Salvador at 90, Nicaragua at 30, in contrast to the regional high country of Costa Rica at 28.

Her name was Prudencia Ayala and she led the way in history to proclaim the equality of rights.     GUATEMALA: Women Standing Up to Violence in Guatemala City On December 1, 2011, a woman from the community of Barcenas, on the outskirts of Guatemala City, was violently assaulted and left unconscious, bleeding from severe wounds. With the support of MADRE, our partners at the Women Workers Committee in Barcenas provided her with emergency support to ensure that she heals both emotionally and physically from this attack. The Women Workers Committee also helped her file a formal complaint against her attackers.
