Pakistan has a population estimated at 180.8 million (UN, 2009) with an area of 796,095 sq km (307,374 sq miles), excluding Pakistani-administered Kashmir (83,716 sq km/32,323 sq miles). The Capital is Islamabad. The major languages spoken are English, Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto and Balochi.

Pakistan experiences continued political unrest with India due to ongoing issues in Kashmir. Pakistan also is experiencing internal violence from insurgent groups.

  • Pakistan ratified The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) on March 12, 1996

  • Pakistan does not have a National Action Plan on United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325)

  • Pakistan has a UN peacekeeping mandate: United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP)
