Seminar: Human Trafficking and Peacekeeping Operations: Research Findings and Legislative Responses

This seminar, co-sponsored by Refugees International and the Russia & Eurasia Program of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, will focus on the issue of sexual exploitation and abuse, particularly human trafficking, in peacekeeping operations. The discussion will explore ways that U.S. policy can be changed to end human trafficking in peacekeeping missions around the world.

Speakers:
- Sarah Martin, Gender Advocate, Refugees International
- Dr. Sarah E. Mendelson, Senior Fellow, Russia & Eurasia Program, Center for Strategic and International Studies
- Martina Vandenberg, Attorney, Jenner & Block LLP
- Maureen Walsh, General Counsel, Helsinki Commission

Sarah Martin will discuss her recent report: "Must Boys be Boys? Ending Sexual Exploitation and Abuse in UN Peacekeeping Missions."

Sarah Mendelson will speak about her findings in the report: "Barracks and Brothels: Peacekeepers and Human Trafficking in the Balkans."

Martina Vandenberg will discuss the application of U.S. criminal law to trafficking offenses committed abroad by U.S. contractors serving with the U.S. military and the United Nations.

Maureen Walsh will provide an update on legislative and OSCE initiatives addressing human trafficking in peacekeeping missions.
