June 24, 2005 - (United Press International) A girls' school in the Afghan province of Logar has been attacked and burned to the ground by armed men.

Police said the attackers tied up two guards, poured gasoline over the small structure and two tents used as classrooms and set them on fire, the BBC reported Thursday.

Local villagers were questioned by police to find out who was behind the attack.

The school's principal said he planned to resume classes for his 665 students, aged 7 to 15, by Saturday.

The principal said, "The children are desperate for their classes to resume. So many were crying when they saw the school was destroyed."

There has been a run of attacks on girls' schools across the country since 2001, when girls returned to school following the fall of the Taliban regime.

In some cases leaflets have been distributed to the village beforehand, warning families not to send their daughters to school or face consequences. Also see United Press International
