MAIN OPPOSITION PARTY FOR WOMEN IN DECISION MAKING ORGANS

December 8, 2003 – (Angola Press Agency - Luanda) The chairperson of Angola's main opposition party women wing, Miraldina Jamba, today in Luanda defended a more active participation of women in decision making organs at all levels.

"The issue of leadership should be seen to so that the country can meet the SADC goal of electing 30 percent of women into the decision making organs at the most various levels till the year 2005", she said.

Miradina Jamba who was addressing a colloquium on "UNITA women and their participation in decision making organs", said that the meeting will review the various constraints that have been affecting the rise of Angolan women in general and of the organisation in particular.

To her, women should do their best to reach that goal, mentioning South Africa, Mauritius and Mozambique as countries with major participation of women in political posts.

The source highlighted that there is need for incentives to more and more adhesion of women to political parties.

LIMA leader also recommended the promotion of full access of women to the productive resources and to their control with a view to the reduction of their level of poverty.

The closed door meeting has as its aim to analyse UNITA women situation and set up conditions for a more active participation in the forthcoming general elections.

The colloquium being attended by more than 50 women is discussing such topics as "experiences of deputies in the African and European countries", "juridical matters on the family and women approved or not by the National Assembly", "Advantages and disadvantages in the participation of UNITA in the Government of Unity and National Reconciliation (GURN)" and "Females Participation in the forthcoming elections".
