Women Under Represented in Decision-Making Organs

October 20, 2006 - (Angola Press Agency) The national director for Women's Rights, Maria de Mpava Medina, informed on Thursday, in Luanda, that the female class is still under represented in the decision-making organs of the country.

According to Maria Mpava Medina, whose working activities come under the umbrella of the in the Family and Women Promotion Ministry (Minfamu), from the 29 existing Ministerial Departments in the country only two are managed by women and among the 45 deputy minister posts, only 10 are occupied by ladies.

The official, who was speaking at the end of the International Conference on Women's Participation in the Political life, regretted the non existence in the country of any female governor, considering that there should be at least four, since "Angola has women that are capable of assuming this post".

The conference that was held on 17-19 of the current month, in Luanda, gathered representatives from South Africa, Rwanda, Mozambique, Colombia, Spain and Brazil. The meeting is part of the project "Strengthening Female Participation in the Public Life", promoted by the NGO Norwegian People's Aid in partnership with the UN Human Rights Office in Angola.
