October 21, 2006 - (Angola Press Agency) The participants at the
International Conference on Woman Participation in Political Life
on Thursday in Luanda defended the creation of a national consensus
agenda for issues of gender balance and women promotion.

on women's participation in public life and politics will take

September 11, 2006 - (Angola Press Agency) Angola has been elected
to the Presidency of the General Assembly of the International
Federation of Women of Juridical Career (FIMCJ), during the organisation's
19th congress held on September 06-10, in Barcelona, Spain.

- Campaign Against Domestic Violence Launched
September 6, 2006 - (Angola Press Agency) A campaign against violence
in the family was launched on Tuesday, in Lubango, southern Huila
Province, by the Family and Women Promotion Provincial Board,
aimed at eradicating or reducing cases of domestic violence, which
are increasing in the province.

Ministry Holds Seminar On UN Convention
July 23, 2006 – (Angola Press) The UN Convention on the
Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women will
be analysed in a seminar that will start Tuesday, promoted by
the Ministry of Family and Promotion of Women (Minfamu). The two-day
event, which will take place in the premises of the Angolan Writers
Union, comes in the ambit of the programme to commemorate African
Women Day, to be marked on July 31.

into the Angolan capital's main maternity hospital, the first
thing that hits any visitor is the stench: a nauseating combination
of blood and excrement. After a short while, the stomach settles
and the eyes adjust to the poor light in the Maternidade Lucrecia
Paim; then, the true wretchedness of the gray walls and broken
windows begins to sink in.

and development opened Thursday in Angola's northern Malanje province
under the UN Development Programme (UNDP), as part of Government

Celeste expressed on Sunday in the commune of Canacassala, Nambuangongo

be considered in the basis of justice and human rights".

TOGETHER WOMEN AND MEN
October 2003 (Oxfam) Just as in every other part of the
world, men and women in Angola have different traditional roles
and responsibilities, and there are many inequalities between
men and women in Angolan society. As a result of the deaths of
many young men during the war, Angola has developed an unusual
demographic profile. Recent figures released by UNICEF show that
there are only 91 men for every 100 women in Angola. This imbalance
is even greater amongst Angolans between the ages of 20 and 35
the principal fighting age groups. While, in the longer-term,
this imbalance might create new leadership or employment opportunities
for women, in the short term it means that there are very large
numbers of households headed solely by women. These women face
particular challenges in making ends meet, ensuring that their
children are able to attend school, and attending to the health
of family members.

SECURITY COUNCIL MISSIONS TO AFRICA: WILL THERE BE A GENDER PERSPECTIVE?
May 30, 2003 (PeaceWomen) In June, the Security Council
members will travel to Central and West Africa in order to witness
the current armed conflict and post-conflict situations in countries
in the respective regions. On June 7, the Council members- led
by the French- will depart for the Great Lakes region, where they
will spend a week visiting six countries, including Angola, Democratic
Republic of Congo (DRC), Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania.
Later in the month, on June 28, the British will lead a Council
mission to West Africa, where the Council members will spend six
days visiting Nigeria, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Liberia, Guinea and
Sierra Leone.

themselves.

ANGOLAN WOMEN RECEIVE GOVERNMENT
LOANS
December 7, 2000 (Panafrican News Agency) Over 500 Angolan
women, most of them displaced by the war and living in the Huambo
province (centre), were granted 20,000 US dollars by the government.The
amount is intended to help them engage in petty trade and other
micro-projects, official sources have said.The Angolan Minister
for Family and Women's Affairs launched the initiative last month,
in a bid to assist war displaced persons, particularly widows.
Each woman received 500 kwanza (KZ), the national currency, which
is to be refunded two months later with a 10 percent interest
