Women Propose National Consensus Agenda for Gender Issues
October 21, 2006 - (Angola Press Agency) The participants at the International Conference on Woman Participation in Political Life on Thursday in Luanda defended the creation of a national consensus agenda for issues of gender balance and women promotion.

Women Under Represented in Decision-Making Organs
October 20, 2006 - (Angola Press Agency) The national director for Women's Rights, Maria de Mpava Medina, informed on Thursday, in Luanda, that the female class is still under represented in the decision-making organs of the country.

Norwegian NGO Promotes Women's Participation in Politics
September 14, 2006 - (Angola Press Agency) An international conference on women's participation in public life and politics will take place on 17-19 October in Angola, promoted by the Norwegian People Aid (NPA) and the UN Human Rights Office.

Country Elected to Lead Female Jurists Organisation
September 11, 2006 - (Angola Press Agency) Angola has been elected to the Presidency of the General Assembly of the International Federation of Women of Juridical Career (FIMCJ), during the organisation's 19th congress held on September 06-10, in Barcelona, Spain.

Huila - Campaign Against Domestic Violence Launched
September 6, 2006 - (Angola Press Agency) A campaign against violence in the family was launched on Tuesday, in Lubango, southern Huila Province, by the Family and Women Promotion Provincial Board, aimed at eradicating or reducing cases of domestic violence, which are increasing in the province.

Family Ministry Holds Seminar On UN Convention
July 23, 2006 – (Angola Press) The UN Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women will be analysed in a seminar that will start Tuesday, promoted by the Ministry of Family and Promotion of Women (Minfamu). The two-day event, which will take place in the premises of the Angolan Writers Union, comes in the ambit of the programme to commemorate African Women Day, to be marked on July 31.

HEALTH-ANGOLA: THE DANGEROUS PROFESSION OF MOTHERHOOD
February 28, 2006- (IPS/GIN) Walking into the Angolan capital's main maternity hospital, the first thing that hits any visitor is the stench: a nauseating combination of blood and excrement. After a short while, the stomach settles and the eyes adjust to the poor light in the Maternidade Lucrecia Paim; then, the true wretchedness of the gray walls and broken windows begins to sink in.

December 8, 2005 – (Angola Press Agency) A workshop on gender and development opened Thursday in Angola's northern Malanje province under the UN Development Programme (UNDP), as part of Government strategy on women participation in decision making organs.

Minister Wants Major Female Participation in Decision-Making Bodies

August 1, 2005 – (Angola Press Agency) Angola's Minister of Family and Woman Promotion Candida Celeste expressed on Sunday in the commune of Canacassala, Nambuangongo municipality, northern Bengo province, her desire to "see in the decision-making bodies" of the African countries a greater woman participation.

June 10, 2005 - (Angola Press Agency - Luanda) Women upgrading, for their better integration in the society was on Thursday defended, here, by the national director for woman rights, Maria Mpavamidina.

April 1, 2005 - (Angola Press Agency - Luanda) The provincial director of the Ministry of Family and Woman Promotion, Angelica Benvinda Gomes, appealed Thursday in Kuito city, Angola's central Bie province, to women to work effectively for the conquest of gender equality and dignity.

Greater Female Integration in Politics Defended
September 16, 2004 - (Angola Press Agency - Luanda) The co-ordinator of gender policy of the Family and Woman Promotion Ministry, Genoveva Policarpo, has defended on Thursday in Luanda, a greater integration of female participation in politics and decision-making as a "factor that should be considered in the basis of justice and human rights".

Luanda Hosts Round-Table On Gender in SADC Parliaments
September 15, 2004 - (Angola Press Agency - Luanda) The country's capital city, Luanda, will host from 22 to 24 of this month a round-table on the "Dissemination of gender in the commissions of SADC's Parliaments", organised by the parliamentary forum of the sub-region.

WOMEN URGED TO WORK WITH SPIRIT OF PEACE
August 1, 2004 - (Angola Press Agency) The provincial director of Family and Women Promotion, Emília Ventura, on Saturday in northern Malanje province called on women to work in the society with spirit of peace, in order to give their contribution to the reconstruction of the country.

ANGOLA: UN RECOMMENDS SPECIAL FOCUS ON WOMEN'S RIGHTS
July 13, 2004 - (IRIN) After bearing the brunt of years of civil conflict, women in Angola require special attention and efforts to achieve equality, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) was told this week.

February 26, 2004 – (Angola Press Agency - Luanda) The representative commission for the participation of women in the revision of the Constitution, gathered today, in Luanda, proposed as working methodology the divulgation in pamphlets written in the counrty's vernacular languages, the importance of this fundamental bill.

December 17, 2003 – (Angola Press Agency - Luanda) Angolan Teresa Musole was honoured this December with the 2003 UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) prize for promotion of gender equity and training of women refugee.

EX-GIRL SOLDIERS HIDDEN BEHIND A VEIL OF FEAR AND DENIAL
December 12, 2003 – (IRIN Analysis) How many young girls were used by Angola's warring parties during its 27-year war is anyone's guess. Denial - by both sides - and fear of discrimination and stigma among former girl soldiers continue to stand in the way of any effort to come up with precise figures.

RULING MPLA WING WANTS MORE WOMEN IN PARTY STRUCTURES
December 10, 2003 – (Angola Press Agency - Luanda) Angola's ruling MPLA party women wing (OMA) today in Luanda spoke of the need for more women within the various structures of the party and of the State, according to their competence and value.

MAIN OPPOSITION PARTY FOR WOMEN IN DECISION MAKING ORGANS
December 8, 2003 – (Angola Press Agency - Luanda) The chairperson of Angola's main opposition party women wing, Miraldina Jamba, today in Luanda defended a more active participation of women in decision making organs at all levels.

UN HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR REFUGEES ORGANISES SEMINAR ON SEXUAL ABUSE

November 25, 2003 – (Angola Press Agency - Luanda) UN agencies to Angola, Non-Governmental Organisations and the community of refugees and displaced persons are holding today a ceremony to mark the World Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women, November 25.

PEACE CONSIDERED AS THE GREATEST CONQUEST OF INDEPENDENCE
November 9, 2003 – (Angola Press Agency - Luanda) The jurist Julia Ornelas, chairman of Angola's Woman Network, considered on Saturday, here, that the greatest achievement of the Angolan people during the 28 years of independence, to be celebrated on the 11th of this month, was the "Peace" on April 2002.

LIVING TOGETHER – WOMEN AND MEN
October 2003 – (Oxfam) Just as in every other part of the world, men and women in Angola have different traditional roles and responsibilities, and there are many inequalities between men and women in Angolan society. As a result of the deaths of many young men during the war, Angola has developed an unusual demographic profile. Recent figures released by UNICEF show that there are only 91 men for every 100 women in Angola. This imbalance is even greater amongst Angolans between the ages of 20 and 35 – the principal fighting age groups. While, in the longer-term, this imbalance might create new leadership or employment opportunities for women, in the short term it means that there are very large numbers of households headed solely by women. These women face particular challenges in making ends meet, ensuring that their children are able to attend school, and attending to the health of family members.

August 15, 2003 – (HRW Press Release) The Angolan government and the United Nations are failing to ensure the safe and voluntary return of millions of Angolans to their homes, Human Rights Watch said in a new report released today.

WOMEN MINISTRY SET UP COUNSELLING CENTRES IN MALANJE
August 12, 2003 – (Angola Press Agency - Luanda) The Provincial Management of Family and Women Promotion Ministry (Minfamu) will set up in the next days counselling centres in every district of Malanje city, with a view to reduce the cases of violence against women.

June 11, 2003 – (Angola Press Agency - Luanda) Angolan Member of Parliament recently said in Brazil's capital, Brazilia, that the representation of Angolan woman in the country's Parliament (AN) is the meanest.

WOMEN MPS IN PORTUGUESE SPEAKING COMMUNITY MEETING
June 9, 2003 – (Angola Press Agency - Luanda) A delegation of Angolan female members of parliament are participating since Sunday, in Brasilia (Brazil), in the first meeting of female MP's of the Portuguese Speaking Countries Community (CPLP).

UPCOMING SECURITY COUNCIL MISSIONS TO AFRICA: WILL THERE BE A GENDER PERSPECTIVE?
May 30, 2003 – (PeaceWomen) In June, the Security Council members will travel to Central and West Africa in order to witness the current armed conflict and post-conflict situations in countries in the respective regions. On June 7, the Council members- led by the French- will depart for the Great Lakes region, where they will spend a week visiting six countries, including Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania. Later in the month, on June 28, the British will lead a Council mission to West Africa, where the Council members will spend six days visiting Nigeria, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

November 25, 2002 – (Angola Press Agency - Luanda) Non governmental Organisations and defenders of gender equality gathered Monday morning in Luanda to commemorate the women world's day against violence being signaled today.

September 24, 2002 – (Angola Press Agency - Luanda) Angolan women politicians, deputies and social organisations representatives started Monday a seminar on conflict resolution basic techniques being run by Angolan Women Network.

WOMEN BEAR BRUNT OF SUFFERING CAUSED BY ANGOLA WAR
May 9, 2002 - (WeNews) A treaty ended Angola's civil war last month, yet women are still struggling to feed themselves and their families. In the nation's capital, 70 percent of residents are unemployed and many women enter the informal market, selling even themselves.

ANGOLAN WOMEN RECEIVE GOVERNMENT LOANS
December 7, 2000 – (Panafrican News Agency) Over 500 Angolan women, most of them displaced by the war and living in the Huambo province (centre), were granted 20,000 US dollars by the government.The amount is intended to help them engage in petty trade and other micro-projects, official sources have said.The Angolan Minister for Family and Women's Affairs launched the initiative last month, in a bid to assist war displaced persons, particularly widows. Each woman received 500 kwanza (KZ), the national currency, which is to be refunded two months later with a 10 percent interest rate. From: http://allafrica.com/stories/200012070243.html
