Gender Equality Week – for the first time in BiH

December 19-22, 2005 -(UNDP) This year, the Gender Equality Week will mark the end of the joint project of the Gender government institutions, non-government organisations and UNDP BiH on implementation of the Law on Gender Equality of BiH, and present its results and the achievements. Implementation of the Law through this project is a result of co-operation of the governmental institutions, non-governmental sector and international organisations.
The project has been supported by the Governments of Canada and Japan, represented by their development agencies, CIDA and WiD.

“Various events will take place as a part of the Gender Week, wherein the achievements and results of the recent work of the gender institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina will be presented, including the state Agency for Gender Equality that was founded in 2005,” said Samra Filipovic-Hadziabdic, the director of Gender Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina. On this occasion, the draft of the Gender Action Plan of Bosnia and Herzegovina for the following five years will be introduced. The Gender Action Plan will set the guidelines for gender mainstreaming and gender equality in all working areas, being a part of the European integrations.

UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, Mr. Stefan Priesner said that “during Gender Week achievements of UNDP Gender Project will also be presented through workshops, trainings and meetings and will be, at the same time, an opportunity to share experiences, practices and approaches around gender mainstreaming as well as frameworks, strategies and methodologies for achieving gender equality in BiH. In that regard, I would like to emphasize the great partnership UNDP has with the Gender Agencies, both on the state and the entity levels.“

Aiming to commence and foster the discussion on challenges and opportunities of the future joint work in the particular segments pertaining into gender equality issues in BiH, a meeting with the international organisations and diplomatic missions in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as with the non-governmental organisations as a part of this four-day manifestation will be organised. Meetings with the media representatives, experts for Slavic languages and members of the Working Group on Media will be held as well.

This group will present the findings and recommendations on the state of gender equality, including the discriminatory and sexist language used in the local media. Findings of this working group clearly demonstrate the gender inequality, which is still one of the serious social problems in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
