Zelenovic sent to Hague for war crimes trial-reports

June 10, 2006 -(Reuters) Serb war crimes suspect Dragan Zelenovic arrived in The Hague on Saturday to face trial at the U.N. war crimes tribunal for rape and torture during the Bosnian war, the tribunal said.

Zelenovic was handed over to Sarajevo by Russia earlier this week after tribunal chief prosecutor Carla del Ponte accused Moscow of dragging its feet on the case.

Zelenovic was flown to the Netherlands on Saturday, and is expected to appear before The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia to enter a plea within the week.

"Dragan Zelenovic was today brought into the Tribunal's custody after almost ten years on the run," the tribunal said in a statement.

A former policeman, Zelenovic was indicted in 1996 for atrocities committed against non-Serbs in the eastern Foca region during the 1992-95 war.

"The indictment alleges that Zelenovic raped, sexually assaulted and participated in gang-raping of women in a number of these places, including the gang-raping of a 15-year-old girl in the Buk Bijela detention centre in July 1992," the tribunal said.
