BOUGAINVILLE PRESIDENT NAMES CABINET

June 6, 2005 - (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) The first president of the Papua New Guinea province of Bougainville, Joseph Kabui, has named his cabinet. Mr Kabui has named Joseph Watawi as vice-president and Madelaine Toroansi as women's representative in his caretaker cabinet, which will be sworn in next Friday.

Mr Kabui was officially declared president over the weekend, after he defeated his main rival, Sir John Momis, by a convincing 17,000-vote margin.

He says he is looking forward to implementing his vision for Bougainville, and has identified a number of key areas for immediate attention including education, health and communications.

Meanwhile, the former deputy governor of Bougainville, Gerald Sinato, who has been elected as an MP, says reconciliation will be a priority for the new government
