Burmese Soldiers Still Raping Ethnic National Women

September 4, 2004 –(DVB) While Burma’s military junta, State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) is strengthening its military might, its soldiers are still committing rapes on ethnic national women of non-Burman regions of Burma including Shan and Karen States, according to a report issued by exiled Burmese women organisations.

Women League of Burma (WLB) published and released a report named ‘System of Impunity’ on 4 September.

The report gives details of the names of the victims and the perpetrators, the dates and places.

The victims were as young as 12 when they were raped. WLB also demanded the UN and the international community to put more pressures on the junta to stop the violence against the women.

In 2002, Shan Women Action Network (SWAN) published and released a report called ‘License to Rape’ detailing systematic rapes committed by Burmese soldiers on women in Shan State.

Karen Women Organisation (KWO) also published a similar report recently highlighting continuing human rights abuses including rapes of Karen women by Burmese soldiers despite the ‘gentlemen’ agreement between the junta and the Karen National Union (KNU) For further information, visit Women’s League of Burma.
