Chin Women Forced to Join Burmese
Women Organisation
October 13, 2004- (DVB) Women from villages in Falam Township, Chin
State, northwest Burma have been forced to join the women organization
sponsored by Daw Khin Win Shwe, the wife of General Khin Nyunt,
the Prime Minister of Burmas military junta, State
Peace and Development Council (SPDC).
According to a Chin woman, village women aged between 18 and 60
have been forced to join the organization and pay 300 kyat as membership
fee. Those who refuse to do so are threatened with fines and punishments.
Most women are poor subsistence farmers and they are finding it
extremely hard to scrape together the necessary 300 kyat demanded
by the representatives of the organization.
