March 8, 2004 (IRIN) - The Central African Republic (CAR) had enjoyed relative stability for about 35 years after its independence when in 1996 it suddenly plunged into a series of conflicts that has since left it reeling in underdevelopment and its population in despair.

November 26, 2003 - (IRIN) The government of the Central African Republic should appoint women to a male-only Ministry of Planning committee charged with vetting projects for submission to donors, a former government minister, Lucienne Goddot, told said on Tuesday.

CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC: PEACEKEEPER KILLED AS HE RESCUES GIRL FROM GANG RAPE
November 24, 2003 – (IRIN) Armed robbers killed a Chadian soldier serving with the Economic and Monetary Community of Central African States (CEMAC) peacekeeping force when his squad attempted to rescue a 14-year-old girl from rape on Sunday in a suburb of Bangui, capital of the Central African Republic (CAR), an official told IRIN.

SEX WORKERS GET VOCATIONAL TRAINING
September 15, 2003 – (IRIN) Sex Workers in the Central African Republic completed on Saturday a five-day training session on starting and managing alternative revenue-generating activities, in an effort to help curb HIV/AIDS infection.

PROSTITUTES SEEK FUNDS TO START ALTERNATIVE BUSINESSES IN CENTRAL AFRICA REPUBLIC
August 25, 2003 – (IRIN) Forty prostitutes, who on Saturday completed three days of training in small business management, are seeking funds to launch alternative revenue-generating activities, Claudia Yetina, the chairwoman of the prostitutes' association in the Central African Republic, told IRIN.

June 20, 2003 – (UN Wire) Women and children in the northern Central African Republic are in urgent need of humanitarian aid, U.N. Population Fund official Adam Ahmat said this week after a four-day mission in the region.

January 15, 2003 – (UN Wire) Fifty refugee women began two-year vocational training courses in the Central African Republic Monday as part of a new $80,000 initiative of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.

January 15, 2003 – (IRIN) The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has launched a programme in the Central African Republic (CAR) to train 50 refugee women in professional skills and provide another 550 with income-generating possibilities.

UNICEF ANTI-POVERTY PROGRAMME LAUNCHED IN CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC
January 3, 2003 (IRIN) - UNICEF and the government of the Central African Republic (CAR) have signed a US $3.5-million-dollar agreement for programmes aimed at reducing poverty among women and children, according to a senior UNICEF official.
