Renewed efforts to outlaw female genital mutilation
October 4, 2006 - (IRIN) Women in Eritrea have joined a nationwide campaign to try to eradicate female genital mutilation (FGM) by lobbying for a law to ban the practice and raise mass awareness among the population, an official at the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW) said on Wednesday.

Uncertain future for thousands of returning IDPs
June 13, 2006 - (reliefweb) The vast majority of the 1.1 million people displaced by the 1998-2000 border war between Ethiopia and Eritrea have long gone home. But Ethiopia's refusal to accept the decision of an international arbitration commission has left some 40,000 Eritrean internally displaced people (IDPs) still unable to return.

U.N. Investigates Alleged Sexual Abuse by Peacekeepers in Eritrea
April 14, 2005 -(Deutsche Presse Agentur) The U.N. Mission monitoring the disputed border between Ethiopia and Eritrea disclosed Thursday that it has set up a committee to investigate allegations of sexual abuse which Eritrean women have made against Mission peacekeepers and civilian staff.

Women Benefit from the NUEW Projects
November 6, 2004 - (Shaebia.org) Letay Gilazghi is one of the women in Zoba Maekel who have benefited from the income-generation project of the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW). Earlier, Letay, who lives in Shemangus-La’elay, had no knowledge that the NUEW gives loans to needy women so that whey will be self-supporting.

RAPE, HUNGER AND HOMELESSNESS
November 1, 2003 – (The Guardian) I am an asylum seeker from Eritrea. At home I was placed in detention because I am a Jehovah's Witness, a religion that is unacceptable to practise in my country. In jail I was raped and beaten so badly that I still have problems walking. I fled to England when I was released for one reason only - I believed that here I would be safe.

ERITREAN WOMAN FLIES TO ETHIOPIA AND ASKS FOR POLITICAL ASYLUM
January 24, 2003 – (Addis Tribune - Addis Ababa) The UN have launched an investigation after an Eritrean woman at the peacekeeping mission in Asmara used a UN helicopter to fly to Ethiopia and ask for political asylum to be granted to her. Rosa Abraham, who is in her 20s and worked for the UN's peacekeeping Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE), asked for political asylum at the weekend, diplomatic sources said.

PEACEKEEPER JAILED FOR PORN FILMS
January 23, 2003 - (The Scotsman) An Irish soldier serving as a United Nations peacekeeper in Eritrea has been caught making pornographic videos of local women and is now serving a jail sentence in Ireland, it was revealed last night.

PORN SCANDAL ROCKS ERITREAN PEACE FORCE: THE UN FORCE IS KEEPING THE PEACE WITH ETHIOPIA
December 20, 2002 – (BBC) A sex scandal has again troubled the United Nations peacekeeping mission to Eritrea and Ethiopia (UNMEE).

UNICEF AIMING TO GET MORE GIRLS INTO SCHOOL
December 4, 2002 – (IRIN) Ethiopia and Eritrea are to be targeted in a major initiative aimed at getting girls into schools, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has announced.

DEMOBILISATION PILOT PHASE COMPLETED
July 2, 2002 – (IRIN) Nearly 3,600 female soldiers were discharged from the Eritrean army last week, bringing to an end the pilot phase of the national demobilisation and reintegration process (DRP).

VULNERABLE CHILDREN AND WOMEN AT RISK
June 11, 2002 – (IRIN) The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Eritrea has warned that it is facing a serious shortfall in funding for this year, putting vital work with vulnerable women and children at risk.
