Opdo Striving to Realize Women's Benefits, Rights

September 27, 2006 - (The Ethiopian Herald) OPDO is working with special attention to the realization of the efforts its efforts underway to ensure the rights of women, an Executive Committee member of the OPDO said.

The Executive Committee member, who is also Minister of Youth and Sports, Aster Mamo, told Oromia newspaper that encouraging results have been achieved following OPDO's efforts to ensure the social, political and economic benefits of women, and added that invigorated activities would also be conducted in the future to enhance women's participation in leadership.

Following the recent election women secured 189 seats in the State Council, Aster said, adding that women's participation in the recent organizational conference has risen to 30 per cent showing the organization's efforts to boost the participation of women.

She further said that various policies and rules are also being enforced in compliance with the state's constitution to ensure women's rights and benefits. Encouraging results have been achieved in improving female students enrolment and maternal health care, Aster said, adding that the livelihood of women is improving as they are benefiting from credit services. The minister said organizing women in associations so as to enhance their income by providing loan is also underway.
