Peace forum useful: Rolls

June 23, 2006 – (Fiji Times) A resolution reached at a regional workshop on gender, conflict, peace and security can provide a useful framework for ensuring consideration of the gender dimension of peace and stability.

Femlink Pacific co-ordinator Sharon Bhagwan Rolls said the regional workshop held in Nadi last week had Fiji participants from the Soqosoqo Vakamarama, ECREA, Fiji Womens Crisis Centre, Fiji Military Forces, Fiji Police Force and the Ministry of Women. Workshop participants recognised the need for the development of practical and time bound action plans to help all stakeholders contribute to the implementation of Resolution 1325.

Fiji participants at the workshop said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs could play a leading role in advancing implementation as it was the key government agency responsible for ensuring compliance with UN Security Council Resolutions.

Ms Rolls said a strengthened and collective approach to the implementation of Resolution 1325 would be a clear and important link to help Fiji as the only Pacific island country represented in the UN Peacebuilding Commission.
