television station have suspended operations after attempts to
censor their news by the military, which seized control of the

December 4, 2006 (Radio New Zealand) There's a call in Fiji for
women to mediate between the government and the military as unease
continues with threats of a military coup. A key NGO, the Citizens
Constitutional Forum, says there's a clear absence of women being
used as mediators despite offers of help during the impasse.

June 9, 2006 - (Pacific Magazine) At an historic Foreign
Office conference, Rosemary Bechler catches up with "suitcase
radio" pioneer, Sharon Bhagwan-Rolls, to discuss women's
roles in politics and peace. One of a dozen or so grassroots activists
who have flown in to bring firsthand expertise, Sharon Bhagwan-Rolls
has travelled twenty hours from Fiji to Sussex for the UK Foreign
and Commonwealth Office's historic conference on UN Resolution
1325 for women's participation in conflict resolution and decision-making
– the first event of its kind the Foreign Office has hosted
on gender issues.

May 24, 2006 -(femLINKPACIFIC Media Release) Today, May 24th,
is the International Women’s Day for Peace and Disarmament
and to commemorate this year’s global theme “Women
Resisting Violence”, the monthly Suva Peace Vigil at the

as we celebrate the participation of women in the recent elections
for the new Autonomous Region of Bougainville. Tenk Yu Tru,
UNIFEM Pacific for responding to the call from Helen Hakena for
womens media coverage of womens participation in this
historical event in our region. It was also the powerhouse coordination
of Helen and her team at Leitana Nehan Womens Development
Agency in Buka which gave me the opportunity to interview so many
women. I would be remiss if I did not mention Monica Samu, who
is a trufriend.

NOW HAS A NEW TEAM OF WOMEN-COMMUNITY RADIO BROADCASTERS
May 27, 2005 - (FemLINK Pacific) Fiji now
has a new team of community radio broadcasters following a joint
training exercise conducted by femLINKpacific: Media Initiatives
for Women, in conjunction with the two major women's networks
in Fiji the National Council of Women and the Soqosoqo Vakamarama
I Taukei (the indigenous women's network), and as Fiji Nursing
Association representative, Litia Veitata said: "The workshop
has brought together membership of the National Council of Women
Fiji and the Soqosoqo Vakamarama for a practical community radio
training initiative; in fact we started learning about our women's
community radio initiative and how we can get involved from day
1 when we all got together and wrote and recorded our own stories.
Participants have come from a range of backgrounds, professional
and community based, we are young and older women and we had very
little if any experience in radio," she added.

MEET FOR ACHIEVING MDG'S THROUGH GENDER MAINSTREAMING
May 20, 2005- (OneWorld) New Delhi: 2005
being the year for the Beijing +10 and MDGs + 5, is a year for
reflection and moving forward. IFAD, UNIFEM and IDRC collaborated
to organize a three day regional conference on 'Development Effectiveness
through Gender Mainstreaming'. Over 120 representatives from Afghanistan,
Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Fiji, India, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives,
Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka attended the conference.

of the Gender and Peace Programme of the Ecumenical Centre for
Research, Education and Advocacy, Koila Costello Ollson, and femLINKpacific's
Coordinator, Sharon Bhagwan Rolls, will join fellow women peacemakers
including representatives from Bougainville and West Papua at
a week long international consultation, will bring about 15 previous
participants together, from the International Fellowship on Reconciliation's
Women Peacemakers Program's (WPP) Intercontinental consultation
which h will be held in Amsterdam from 16 to 22 March. Last year,
the WPP Pacific consultations were staged in East Timor in January.

January 6, 2005 - (femLINKpacific Release) With all the efforts
to date since the December 26th tragedy, it is still important
to continue to link the advancement of women in peace-building
especially in the context of the deadly conflict in Sri Lanka,
with the need right now, on the ground, which includes the need
for women's authority and leadership in the recovery programmes
after the terrible tsunami. If women's voices are absent from
the international and national communities involved, the recovery
process will be unbalanced and completely inadequate for any country's
future.

Speaking to Women for Peace: No More Violence
November 22, 2004 -(femLINKpacific) Planning has begun for a femTALK
89.2fm commemorative broadcast for the 16 days of activism against
gender violence (November 25-December 10 2004), Sunday, 28 November
2004. Participants, all women, from a range of womens and
community based organisations heard today (24 November) that in
addition to the Health angle to this year's theme, a secondary
theme is also on violence against women and HIV/AIDS. This will
link into the United Nations General Assembly Special Session
in 2006 which provides the 5-year review on the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
It also links into the World AIDS day on December 1 theme of Women
and HIV/AIDS.

When Women Share in Decision Making
November 18, 2004 -(femLINKpacific) With a mission to get more
women elected or appointed into parliament, local government institutions
and policy making statutory bodies and communities, and setting
a target of 50% of womens representation at all levels of
decision making by 2015, participants at this weeks national
consultation on Women in Decision Making, have formulated a draft
National NGO Plan of Action on Women in Shared Decision Making
(WISDM), which will now be fine tuned for implementation by a
steering committee, to be chaired by the National Council of Women.

all levels of decision making despite global commitments through
the Beijing Platform for Action, the Millennium Development Goals
and at regional level, the revised Pacific Platform for Action.

Plan of Action and the Fiji Governments Strategic Development

between 1997 and 2001 have indicated an alarming trend in Fiji
in relation to violent crimes committed against women with 9370
cases reported to police within the five years. This was the recent
finding of the Fiji Law Reform Commission at the end of its first
phase of the review of the Domestic Violence Reference Discussion
Papers issued on 23 September 2004.

was probably the best way to portray that womens media initiatives
are not about excluding our male counterparts!

ASKS FOR CEDAW REVIEW ON EMERGING ISSUE
August 24, 2004 - (Pacnews) A Pacific academic has called for
the review of the Convention for the Elimination of All Forms
of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) to address what she calls
'a scary emerging issue in the Pacific today' - a rise in migrant
women workers and problems they face in their new countries.

As the 7th Commonwealth Women's Affairs Ministers Meeting got
away in Nadi today, consensus was reached last night (Sunday 30
May) to incorporate the implementation of the UN Security Council
Resolution 1325 into the Commonwealth Gender Plan of Action which
has identified the issues of Democracy, Peace and Conflict as
one of the key priority areas for the next decade (2005 - 2015).

March 9, 2004 (femLINKpacific) At the Women and Peace workshop
that got underway in Suva today (09 March) participants began
working out their personal definitions of peace and security.
Workshop trainer/facilitator Henry Rigamoto, was overwhelmed by
the knowledge and experiences shared: I have been involved
in a number of peacebuilding workshops through the Ecumenical
Centre (ECREA) and also in my work as Coordinator of Interfaith
Search Fiji, but today I am totally overwhelmed by todays
very positive and inspiring discussions. They have recognised
their role in ensuring peace and security at a personal, local
and national level, and that means that this is a very important
empowerment process because they are also recognising the power
and knowledge within oneself and ones community to be peace builders,
to assist in conflict prevention and conflict resolution.
