Police: Georgian policewomen’s initiative is a model for the
region
January 2006 – (UN News Centre) United Nations police officials
said today that they hope a recent initiative in Georgia to set
up the country’s first policewomen’s association will
become a model for other post-conflict countries and allow policing
to become more representative of wider society.

SEMINAR
ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE HELD IN TBILISI
August 2, 2004 (Society Institutes Network Womens
Program) A seminar exploring the Duluth Model of coordinated community
response to domestic violence took place July 29-31, 2004 in Tbilisi,
Georgia. Representatives from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan,
Moldova, and Ukraine attended the program, which was presented by
Michael Paymar and Rose Thelen from Duluth, Minnesota, USA. The
seminar was sponsored by the Open Society Institutes Network
Womens Program, and covered creating and implementing programs
for both victims and perpetrators of domestic violence. A complete

SOUTH
OSSETIA: THORN IN GEORGIA'S SIDE
August 19, 2004 - (BBC News) South Ossetia has been a de-facto
independent region of Georgia since the collapse of the Soviet Union
in 1991. But earlier this year the newly elected Georgian President,
Mikhail Saakashvili, pledged to bring it back under central control.
Since then, tensions and clashes between Georgian and South Ossetian
forces have escalated, and now there are fears the situation might
descend into all-out war.

WOMEN
REFUGEES RELEASED HOSTAGE AND LEFT METROSTROY BUILDING SEIZED IN
TBILISI
August 8, 2003 (ITAR-TASS) Seventeen women refugees from
Abkhazia who had seized a Metrostroy office in Tbilisi yesterday
released a hostage and left the building in the evening. They made
such a decision after they had got assurances they would be granted
habitation in another building.

CONFERENCE FOCUSES ON ROLE OF MEDIA IN PROMOTING GENDER EQUALITY
July 21, 2003 (OSCE) Over 100 journalists and media experts
from the Southern Caucasus, Central Asia and Baltic States gathered
in Tbilisi today for a three-day international conference on the
role of media in promoting gender equality.
WOMENS
PRISON REOPENS IN TBILISI
June 17, 2003 (ICRC) In April, an earthquake seriously damaged
the womens detention facility in Tbilisi, forcing it to close.
The ICRC set about restoring adequate conditions of detention by
partly repairing the accommodation, and 88 women have now returned
to the prison, which has a capacity of 250.

CONCLUDING
CONFERENCE OF U.S. EMBASSY FUNDED WOMENS LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
IN GEORGIA
July 10, 2002 (Tbilisi) On July 11-13, American non-governmental
organization, Project Harmony, with support from the U.S. Department
of State, will hold a conference for the U.S. Embassy funded Georgian
Women's Leadership Program. The conference will be dedicated to
the theme of "Building Networks of Civic Leadership in Georgia."
Ms. Sharon Miles, wife of the U.S. Ambassador to Georgia, will open
the conference on July 11, 2002 at 10:00 with the keynote address.
The conference will take place in Tabakhmela.
