INTEGRATE WOMEN INTO THE PRESIDENCY
- PARTIES TOLD
By Ernest Kofi Adu
June 14, 2004 - (Ghanaian Chronicle Accra)
Two political activists have called for encouraging women to be
presidents, to help solve the socio-economic problems facing the
nation.
They are Mr. Kwasi Kyei of the New Patriotic Party
(NPP) and Alhaji Mohammed Sanni of the National Democratic Congress
(NDC).
The call was made at separate interviews, in which
the two advocates observed that, the marked socio-economic improvement
that had taken place in the nation could be partly attributed to
women whom they described as the best managers in the running of
home activities.
According to the interviewees, the country would
be better of if women could attain the highest offices.
According to them, we have potential female personalities
who are more qualified than their male counterparts to man the high
offices of the nation, and having tested the men for far too long,
we should give our women the chance, to assess what their output
to socio-economic development would be. The two, however, pointed
out that women in the country need to come out of their shells to
prove themselves tough and thick in their skin enough to be recognized
as a force to reckon with in case any party wanted to tap their
expertise for the presidency.
They said it was about time women added value to
their lives by participating in active politics and being able to
absorb all forms of shocks.
When asked whether the various political parties
had the will to appoint female candidates for the vice presidency
at least, the two answered in the affirmative but failed to let
Ghanaians know whether President Kufuor or Prof. Atta Mills would
pick a woman as a running mate for the coming election.
Mr. Kyei stated that it was inappropriate to change
a winning team whilst the NDC guru indicated that the choice of
a running mate was the sole prerogative of the flag-bearer of the
party.
