YOUNG PAINTERS SPEAK OUT FOR WOMEN
IN VIOLENCE
May 8, 2005 - (PTI) The sense of insecurity for
women in the cities has moved budding artists in the capital to pick
up the brush on the sensitive theme, "women, violence and international
humanitarian law".
"No woman is safe today. We can feel the sense of insecurity
everywhere. Therefore to work on such a theme was quite interesting
and it came naturally", says Sunanda Khajuria, a young painter.
The paintings of the young students, which are on display in an exhibition
here, depict their sensitive side in a rather expressive way. The
exhibition has been organised jointly by the International Committee
of Red Cross, the Embassy of Switzerland and College of Art.
"Women have always been depicted as symbol of love. But at the
same time, they have been subjected to torture and harassment in a
male dominated society. They are raped physically and mentally especially
at the time of conflict", says Sunanda.
The students have used their canvas to raise their concerns about
the rampant cruelty being meted out to women.
"My painting is an appeal to people all over to listen to the
mute appeals of the women who are suffering from war. Because all
that is left after a war is emptiness, deprivation and desolation"
says Charuvi Agrawal.
