Election highlights
August 10, 2006 - (Chicago tribune) Navajo pioneer: For the
first time, a woman has been chosen as one of two candidates facing
off for the presidency of the Navajo Nation, whose 27,000-square-mile
reservation spans the northeast corner of Arizona and adjoining
areas of New Mexico and Utah. Lynda Lovejoy captured 22 percent,
putting her into a runoff against President Joe Shirley Jr., who
won 28 percent.
Sending a mixed message: Voters in Kochville Township, Mich.,
chose Crystal Kauer as the Republican nominee for township treasurer.
They also voted to recall her. Which means she'll be fired when
the vote is certified, but she's likely to get the job back in
November because no Democrat ran in the primary. Asked how she
felt about the results, Kauer said: "Confused."
"Lean and hungry look": Five challengers jumped into
the race Wednesday against Rep. William Jefferson (D-La.), whose
Washington office was raided by the FBI in a bribery investigation.
The three-day filing period started Wednesday. Jefferson described
his challengers as opportunists, saying: "These folks have
a lean and hungry look."
A step up: Supporters of Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-Ga.) were unbowed
by her defeat. "Cynthia McKinney is loved nationally, locally
and internationally," said state Rep. Tyrone Brooks. "I
expect her to move to the international scene, especially as it
relates to peace, justice and environmental issues. This is going
to elevate her to another level."
