Women working for peace support Basque process

October 24, 2006 - (eitb) It's essential for women to participate in peace negotiations to find the solution to the Basque conflict, and for this process to incorporate their experiences, interests and expectations, a statement by the women read.

Women in peace processes around the world endorsed a statement applauding "the process of dialogue" that has been opened up in the Basque Country "to seek peace and the solution to the Basque conflict." The statement also considers it "essential" for women "to actively participate in peace negotiations" and "to incorporate their experiences, interests and expectations, as urged by the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325.

This "International declaration of women in favour of the Basque peace process" was agreed and endorsed by nine women taking part in the SARE 2006 International Congress “Women generating peace,” held Monday and Tuesday in the Basque city of Donostia-San Sebastian. The congress aims to analyse the role of women in peace processes, in order to favour the active participation of Basque women in the current context.

The lecturers were prominent women who work for peace in situations of war and postwar periods, including North Irish Ann Hoppe, Debby Lerman, from Israel's Bat Shalom, Palestinian Amal Khreishe, la Kosovo's Luljeta Vuniqui, Colombian Patricia Buriticá and Olga Lucía Ramírez, Serb Stasa Zajovic, Argentine Nora Cortiñas and Liberian Etweda A.Cooper.

The statement endorses the process of dialogue that has been opened in the Basque Country "aware that the way of the word, mutual understanding and negotiation is the only valid way to overcome political problems and construct a real and long-lasting peace. It also acknowledges "the valuable work that women have carried out all over the world as catalysts of peace, pushing forward dialogue and defending reconciliation among people and communities."
