Iranian MPs call for international support for women and children

October 19, 2004 (Tehran Times) Two Iranian MPs on Monday called on the international community to support the rights of children and women and urged universal attempts to liberate women and children in the occupied countries.

Addressing a two-day World Female MPs Summit to Support Children's Rights in Rome, Fatemeh Aliya and Fatemeh Ajorlou called for removal of contradictory points in the international conventions on children's rights and elimination of discrimination.

Iranian MP from the capital city of Tehran Fatemeh Aliya, in her speech, referred to abortion as a violation of the rights of an embryo. She said supporting children's rights should include various stages of their life ranging from embryonic period until the end of adolescence.

She also criticized the international community for their inaction towards the rights of children living in occupied countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine and called for a universal approach to the restoration of children's rights free from politics.

Occupation of countries under whatever pretext and form should be condemned by all international conventions meant to preserve the rights of human beings including children and women, she added.

The international community should provide correct information for children through the internet and satellite, said Iranian MP from the city of Karaj (west Tehran) Fatemeh Ajorlou.

Ajorlou stressed that the world community is vying for establishment of durable peace in the world and justice is needed to achieve this aim.

The two-day World Female MPs Summit to support Children's Rights is scheduled to be over in Rome on Monday. Women MPs from 200 countries across the world took part in the meeting.
