WOMEN IN KASHMIR, CITIZENS AT LAST
December 9, 2002 - (Women's Feature Service) Until recently, women in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) were denied equality and justice because an archaic law held that a woman ceased to be a subject of the state if she married a non-J&K resident. This meant that she lost her right to own property, continue in a government job and vote in elections. A number of prominent women suffered because of this discriminatory law. Now, after a 25-year legal battle, the J&K High Court has ruled in favour of women. "Women's groups have for long been conscious of the fact that there is a deliberate campaign by the men in power to link a women's issue with sensitive ones like `special status of Jammu and Kashmir'."
