LEBANON:
UN calls for end to IDF attacks that hinder relief aid
August 7, 2006 - (IRIN) The United Nations
Humanitarian Coordinator in Lebanon, David Shearer, on Monday
called on the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) to end its attacks
on civilian infrastructure - including bridges, roads, fuel depots,
power stations and hospitals - and to cease all actions hindering
the supply of humanitarian relief to the hundreds of thousands
of displaced people across the country.

Report: Middle East “Voices of Resistance”
August 7, 2006 -(womens media center) In the displacement of Lebanese
civilians due to the current conflict, women are suffering the
most, said Lina Abou-Habib, speaking from Beirut on a marathon
broadcast by FIRE (Feminist International Radio Endeavour). Originating
in Costa Rica, “Voices of Resistance” began with alternating
live segments in Spanish and English on Friday, August 4, and
extended into the weekend.

End Indiscriminate Strikes on Civilians
August 3, 2006 – (human
rights news) Israeli forces have systematically failed to distinguish
between combatants and civilians in their military campaign against
Hezbollah in Lebanon, Human Rights Watch said in report released
today. The pattern of attacks in more than 20 cases investigated
by Human Rights Watch researchers in Lebanon indicates that the
failures cannot be dismissed as mere accidents and cannot be blamed
on wrongful Hezbollah practices. In some cases, these attacks
constitute war crimes.

Female migrant workers face uncertain futures
May 7, 2006 -(IRIN) “I pray
to God you will have a good madam,” said Nirosha’s
mother, as her 18 year-old daughter was set to leave Sri Lanka
to work as a domestic servant in a Lebanese household. “Maybe
she’ll even let you prepare Sri Lankan food.”
The scene, from the recent documentary “Maid in Lebanon”,
sums up the hopes and fears of the hundreds of thousands of female
migrant workers, mainly from Asia and Africa, who work overseas
as maids or nannies.

LEBANON: Gov't urged to combat trafficking in human beings
September 22, 2005 - (IRIN) Lebanon needs to review its domestic
laws and policies to conform to international norms in order to
combat widespread trafficking in human beings, especially women
and children, a United Nations expert said.

groups call for amendment of Penal Code
July 22, 2005 - (Daily Star News) The Lebanese Penal Code "cruelly
discriminates" against women and desperately needs adjustment,
according to women's rights activists speaking at the Lebanese Press
Federation. The Lebanese Women's Network, a coalition that includes
most major women's groups in the country, gathered in the presence
of media representatives in a bid to raise awareness of the "unfairness"
and "cruelty" of the Lebanese Penal Code regarding women.

Sisterhood Is Global Institute/Jordan (SIGI/J), one of the most
effective Jordanian womens organizations working to promote
womens human rights through education and skills training
programs. Thirty women leaders from eleven Arab countries including
Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine,
Saudi Arabia, the Sudan, and Yemen took part in the week-long Institute
for training of trainers.

girl refugees participated in leadership development workshops organized
by WLP and its partners Machreq/Maghreb Gender Linking and Information
Project (MACMAG GLIP) in Lebanon and the Womens Self-Promotion
Movement (WSPM) in Zimbabwe. MACMAG GLIP and WSPM facilitated workshops
that provided training in effective communication, collaborative
decision-making, and techniques for articulating and developing
individual and group projects.

October 8, 2003 (Daily Star) Personal status law under
fire for sanctioning discrimination. Contemporary social realities
make changes to archaic statute a priority in the interests
of fair relations between sexes, NGOs say. The Lebanese Council
to Resist Violence Against Women said the Lebanese Personal Status
Law was outdated, describing it as unfit for todays
social realities and calling for its correction.

basic services. Off the main road in the prestigious Horsh Tabet

by a cluster of trees encircling the property. Its a rather
tranquil image to take in for a moment, but this facade fades as
soon as you enter the house. What goes on inside the house is of
vital importance to women living in Lebanon, specifically women
stomaching the insalubrious and detrimental conditions of living
on the poverty line.
