Gender Equality Policies and Practices in Veles Municipality

March 20 2007 – (OneWorld) The Akcija Zdruzenska civic association from Skopje, in cooperation with Veles based women activists, organized a forum in Veles, March 15, 2007, to discuss the topic of Gender Equality Policies and Practices in Veles Municipality.

The Mayor of Veles, Municipal Council members and representatives of relevant institutions and women NGOs took part at the forum, which is one of a series of similar events organized under the Development and Support for Local Community Activists’ Initiatives programme.

The Forum aimed to present the findings and recommendations of the recent study Gender Equality and Local Self-Government – Veles Municipality. Also, the Forum provided a space for discussion of possibilities to incorporate those recommendations into local policies and practices, in accordance with the specific local conditions in Veles.

The study resulted from the joint efforts of Akcija Zdruzenska and the Veles-based women activists, prepared to provide a detailed insight into the existing local practices and policies regarding gender inequality.

The meeting also presented the participants with opportunity to create partnerships between activists and the local self-government, designed to identify the priorities for institutional approach to the problem resulting from gender inequality.
