PARLIAMENT TABLES MOTION
ON WOMEN'S RIGHTS
By Frederick Philander
June 11, 2004 (New Era)
The ratification of the protocol to the African Charter on Human
and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa, is one of
three strong motions that was tabled by both ruling and opposition
parties in Parliament on Tuesday.
Parliament resumed its business
on Tuesday after an adjournment on April 30 this year. The human
and women rights motion was submitted by the ruling party's Minister
of Women Affairs and Child Welfare, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, and
will be discussed next Tuesday.
Tsudao Gurirab of the Congress
of Democrats (CoD) opposition party gave notice of a motion on issues
relating to the controversial Special Field Force to be discussed
on June 22.
Gurirab's motion states that
"in view of the increasing public complaints, including allegations
of kidnapping and torture, discuss issues relating to the training
and professionalism of the Special Field Force and recommend corrective
measures in this regard".
"There is a need in our
country to speed up the land reform, a process which is very volatile.
We have seen many under-utilised resettlement farms in the country.
We want clear chartered plans of action. Therefore the national
debate on expropriation of land and its ramifications must be addressed
to ensure investor confidence in the process and clear plan of action
known by all," reads the motivation of a motion that was tabled
by the DTA's McHenry Venaani for next week.
