This December
By Christof Maletsky
September 14, 2006 - (The Namibian) The Swapo
Women's Council has decided to hold its next Congress in December
this year to elect new leaders. Linea Shaetonhodi, Deputy Secretary
for the Women's Council, announced on Tuesday that the Congress
would be held at Rundu during the weekend of December 8 to 10.
It will be attended by more than 550 delegates
who will elect a new Secretary of the Swapo Women's Council and
her deputy. It was not clear yesterday whether the current Secretary,
Eunice Iipinge, will stand for re-election. She is eligible to stand
again, according to the party's constitution. Iipinge was elected
at the December 2001 congress, which took place at Ongwediva, and
replaced the late Erica Ramakhutla.
Shaetonhodi was voted in as Deputy Secretary.
Iipinge received 284 votes while her opponent, Josephina Hamutwe,
mustered 77. The race for the post of the Deputy Secretary was between
Genorosa Andowa, then the Councillor for the Anamulenge Constituency,
and a member of the National Council, and Shaetonhodi received 277
votes against Andowa's 130.
Shaetonhodi said last weekend's Central Committee
meeting discussed preparations for the December Congress. They established
subcommittees for administration, transport and logistics, finance,
protocol and documentation and one for the party constitution and
rules of procedure.
