COORDINATION TO CHECK GIRL TRAFFICKING

December 9, 2002 – (Kathmandu Post) Media persons based at the Indo-Nepal bordering region have emphasised the need to work together with mutual co-ordination in order to check trafficking of girls from various transit points on the Indo-Nepal border.

They were speaking at an interaction programme on "co-ordination of media persons in checking girl trafficking" organised by Lumbini Communications and Community Society, an NGO running media campaign against girl trafficking in the border regions.

The participants were also the view that despite of the millions of rupees spent by a large number of government and non-government organisations to check the problem the achievement has been minimal.

Such organisations are more concerned of making money than doing the actual work and have been limiting themselves to the urban sector rather than going to the fields at the concerned VDCs, they said.

They said that lack of education and awareness and the trend of making easy money are the main reasons behind the problem and felt that media campaign could be crucial in raising awareness towards this end.

As it is a common problem for both the countries media persons should make a joint effort to control it, they added.

Emphasis was also given on sharing of information and experiences between media persons of the two countries, analysis and research and running of media campaign to raise awareness among the people in the bordering region.
