PUBLIC OFFICE: WOMEN MORE COMPETENT - COMMISSIONER
By Chinedu Eze, Abakaliki

November 23, 2003 – (This Day - Lagos) Ebonyi State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Ugo Nnachi has said that women were more responsible, competent and effective in public office than their male counterparts and canvassed that more women should be given higher responsibilities so that they would have the opportunity to positively transform the nation.

Speaking to journalists in Abakaliki on at the weekend, Mrs. Nnachi said that men were under pressure when they occupied public office and that was what has given rise to so much corruption in the polity, but women were not under such pressure and when they were in governance they concentrated and work effectively.

According to the Commis-sioner, women always knew what they were there to do when given higher responsibilities and that was why women should be effectively involved in politics because they would be able to put things right and show the men the right way to do things.

"Women don¡t just want to enter into politics, but they want to enter into politics because they can make a difference. We want to able to bring a new orientation into governance. There is a lot of corruption in the system and we want to change that."
