COMMISSIONER WANTS MORE WOMEN IN GOVERNANCE
By Chinedu Eze, Abakaliki

November 25, 2003 – (This Day - Lagos) Ebonyi State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Ugo Nnachi has said that women are more responsible, competent and effective in public office than their male counterparts and canvases that more women should be given higher responsibilities so that they would have the opportunity to positively transform the nation.

Speaking to journalists in Abakaliki, Nnachi said that men are under pressure when they occupy public offices and that was what has given rise to so much corruption in the polity, but women are not under such pressure and when they are involved in governance, they concentrate and work effectively.

According to the commissioner, "women always know what they are there to do when given higher responsibilities and that is why women want to be effectively involved in politics because they will be able to put things right and show the men the right way to do things".

"Women don't just want to enter into politics, but they want to enter into politics because they can make a difference. We want to be able to bring a new orientation into governance. There is a lot of corruption in the system and we want to change that."

Nnachi said that in Ebonyi state women are actively involved in governance because the Egwu administration is gender sensitive, so women are given higher positions both in the Local Government councils and in the state.

"Politically women have been repositioned in Ebonyi state. They now take their rightful place in the scheme of things", she said.
