DAYAK,
MADURESE WOMEN HOLD MEETING FOR PEACE
June 13, 2005 -(Jakarta Post) Members of a
communication forum for Dayak and Madurese women, or Dara Arum as
the forum is named, gathered here in Yogyakarta on Saturday for
a six-day meeting to discuss peace-keeping efforts between the two
conflicting communities.

May 9, 2005 -(Bernama) Indonesia, one of the
"source" countries for trafficking in women, hopes the
Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) member countries will support national
plans and multi-sectoral strategies to fight human trafficking.

SULAWESI: POSO WOMEN FIGHT SEXUAL EXPLOITATION BY SECURITY FORCES
June 19, 2004 - (The Jakarta Post) The National Commission on
Human Rights (Komnas HAM) has been urged to
investigate alleged sexual exploitation of women by security forces
in the troubled town of Poso, Central Sulawesi.

In commemorating International Womens day which fell
on Monday March 8, women from a number of different groups in Yogyakarta
accused the political parties participating in the elections of
not fighting for the rights of women. They also rejected discrimination
and violence against women in Aceh and West Papua.

Womens Day was also commemorated in Palu. Interestingly, women
in Palu protested against the marriage law and the issue of polygamy.

January 10, 2004 (The Jakarta Post) The North Sulawesi Legislative
Council enacted on Thursday a bylaw dealing with women trafficking
and violence against children.

VILLAGERS A VIOCE IN INDONESIA
2003 (WORLDBANK) We used to be half-dead when we arrived
in the morning at our rice paddies. Now we get there in minutes,
says one North Sulawesi villager. Of course, it is at harvest
time when we reap the greatest benefits of the new road. Carrying
the rice while treading on the tiny zigzag path that was here before
was an act of acrobatics and of endurance. Now we do it by motorcycle
taxi in no time at all.
