CEDAW Consults With Government

October 28, 2004 - (Concord Times) Expert from the Committee for the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) are currently in Sierra Leone to consult government on the implementation of the 1979 Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against women.

The team met with Gender Affairs Minister, Attorney General, Health, Education, Economic Development and Planning.

They would also meet with local and international non-governmental organization. Established in 1982, CEDAW's Expert Body comprises of 23 experts on women's issues from around the world monitoring progresses made on the CEDAW Convention.

United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women proposes to assistance in providing funds to sensitize officials on the provision of assessing the current challenges implementation, identifying opportunities for its use and the preparation of Sierra Leone's period report to CEDAW.

According to the release the second phase has to do with training programme on the provisions of the convention which will be implemented for mid level government officials.
