Woman MPL Becomes Deputy Speaker
By Sibusiso Mboto Estcourt
October 28, 2005 – (BuaNews) A member
of the KwaZulu Natal Provincial Legislature Lydia Johnson has been
appointed Deputy Speaker of the legislature, becoming the first
woman in the province to assume such a position.
Ms Johnson took over the position that was left vacant after the
death of Inkosi Mhlabunzima Hlengwa in March this year.
"On behalf of the legislature I congratulate you on your appointment
and express good wishes as you discharge your duties in the near
future," said Speaker Willies Mchunu.
Ms Johnson was chairperson of the Health Portfolio Committee.
The move is seen as part of government's commitment to appoint women
to senior positions in all spheres of government.
Ms Johnson is regarded by many as one of the most active members
in the legislature.
She has held leadership positions since 1996 when she was elected
Mayor of North Durban Central Council- a position she held until
her deployment to the provincial legislature in June 1999.
She has also been an active member of a number of committees including
the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa).
Addressing the house after the announcement of her appointment,
Ms Johnson expressed her gratitude at being given the new task.
"I hope that we will all work together as we ensure that the
vision of a better life for all is realized," she said.
