HALF OF REPORTED ATTACKS OCCUR IN EAST METROPOLE

October 15, 2003 – (Cape Argus - Cape Town) The Peninsula has been dubbed the "Cape of Rape" by detectives dealing daily with indecent assault, attempted rape and rape.

Area Commissioner Allan Mondisa said that in May and June the 22 police stations in the Peninsula's East Metropole had accounted for 49% of all reported rape and attempted rape cases in the Cape police district, which included Southern Cape, Boland and the Western Cape.

Mondisa said in many cases alcohol was a major factor.

"In July in the East Metropole most rapes and attempted rapes were reported in Khayelitsha, Kuils River, Kraaifontein, Delft, Elsies River, Atlantis, Ravensmead, Macassar, Bellville and Bishop Lavis," Mondisa said.

Weekend attacks usually occurred after dark, but in daylight during the week.

An important part of the police strategy against rape was to create awareness by informing the community about trends and dangers.
Police stations were all equipped with victim support facilities, and victims were assisted during the investigation and court process.
Mondisa said victims were encouraged to lay charges despite their own trauma, or intimidation by others.

He advised women to try to escape or to reason with the attacker. If the woman was able to fight back, she should aim for the man's eyes, penis and testicles. She should also try to attract the attention of other people.

Women who had been raped should not bath before going to the police.
