Tamil Women's Uprising Day Celebrations Begin in Kilinochchi


October 8, 2004 –(TamilNet) Tamil Womens' Uprising Day celebrations and 17th year memorial of 2nd Lt Malathy began at 9am Wednesday at the Kilinochchi Central play grounds, sources in Vanni said. Deputy Director of Heros Memorial, Ms Thamil Arasi, presided the event.

Ms Christinamma Thiyagam, mother of three martyrs and her husband, Director of Heros Memorials, Pon Thiyagam, lit the lamp of sacrifice.

Special Commander of Malathi Brigade, Col.Vithsha, hoisted the Tamil Eelam flag. Ratneswara Kurukkal lit the common flame in front of Malathi's picture frame and Pedurupillai, a father of LTTE martyr, paid floral tribute to Malathi's picture.

Following these events several opening ceremonies of exhibition halls took place.

Director in charge of Women's Military Training Academy, Ms Ajanthi, declared open the Weapons Exhibition Hall. Women fighters stationed near the exhibits explained to the visitors on the use of different exhibited modern weapons.

Head of LTTE Women's Finance Section, Kothai, then opened the photographic exhibition. Exhibits included photos from key battles fought by the LTTE Women brigades, photos capturing impact of war on Tamils and other historical events of Tamil struggle.

Deputy Head of LTTE Police, Mathavan, opened a model police station where women police constables explained to visitors the functioning of Tamil eelam police force. Kannalan of LTTE police unveiled the name board of a new Women's Affairs Office of the Tamil eelam police.

Dr.Elumathi Karikalan opened a model hospital building by cutting the ribbon. Sea Tiger exhibit Hall was then opened by Special Commander of Sea Tiger Women's wing Viduthalai.

Mine Clearing Division Head of Women's Wing, Aswini, opened the Heavy Weapons exhibit hall. KutiSri Motor Brigade's commander Lt.Col.Gopal then paid floral tribute to pictures of LTTE Women cadres of Malathi brigade.

Celebrations concluded for the day with several cultural events and special speeches, according to sources in Vanni.
