'WOMEN GET RAW DEAL IN POLITICS'
By Anne Mugisa, Kampala

December 10, 2003 – (New Vision - Kampala) WOMEN still get a raw deal in politics despite the adoption of affirmative action, a report by the British Council has revealed.

The report said affirmative action had been grossly misunderstood, frustrating real gains.

The report was presented on Monday by Jackie Asiimwe-Mwesige, chairperson of Uganda Women's Organisation's Network (UWONET) at the British Council.

It was launched by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga.

Asiimwe said the political system had failed to address the issues marginalising women in society.

She said the greatest obstacle was inadequate conceptualisation of affirmative action and its goals.

She said lack of policy on affirmative action had led to different interpretations by different people, most of whom missed the point.
