MP MOOTS LAW TO BAN FMG
By Jude Etyang

February 21, 2004 – (New Vision - Kampala) Mwenge South MP Dora Byamukama has mooted the enactment of a law to ban Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

Byamukama said FGM was one of the customary practices which conflicted with human rights and affected Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health (ASRH).Byamukama was presenting a paper on the laws and policies that impact on ASRH in Uganda at a breakfast meeting at the Sheraton hotel on Wednesday.

She said the gaps in the law included a lack of enforcement mechanisms like family and child courts and lack of laws for enforcement of rights provided for under the constitution.

She said child and family courts should be established in every district in Uganda with a specific time frame as one of the ways of supporting reproductive health.
