SWEDEN GIVES $1 MILLION TO UGANDAN WOMEN, CHILDREN

June 14, 2004 – (UN Wire) The Swedish government has donated $1 million to UNICEF's efforts to help vulnerable children and women in northern and eastern Uganda, about a million of whom have been driven from their homes by fighting during the 18-year rebellion by the Lord's Resistance Army.

"The donation will assist IDPs [internally displaced people] in building learning centers in conflict-affected districts and provide displaced children with scholastic materials," said UNICEF representative to Uganda Martin Mogwanja. "We are grateful for the strong commitment by the government and the people of Sweden to stem the impact of conflict on hundreds of thousands of children" (Xinhua News Agency/ReliefWeb, June 14).

U.N. Emergency Relief Coordinator Jan Egeland has condemned the recent wave of attacks on IDP camps by LRA rebels.

"These vicious attacks against some of the most vulnerable civilians are appalling; in many cases the victims have fled after attack, desperate for safety. I condemn these atrocities in the strongest terms and call on the Lord's Resistance Army to stop all abuses against civilians immediately," Egeland said.
Attacks on IDPs in the past four weeks left more than 125 people dead, Egeland said (Xinhua News Agency/ReliefWeb II, June 14).
