Uganda: Women Ministers
Appeal for More Aid
By Joyce Namutebi
June 19, 2007 – (AllAfica) CONCERNED that
30 million children are not in primary school and that 60% of HIV/Aids
cases globally are in the Commonwealth countries, ministers for
women's affairs have asked the heads of government to provide sufficient
funds for gender equality.
"We have requested the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting
to provide adequate funding for gender equality, gender issues and
democracy and development," minister Syda Bbumba told journalists
after the close of the Eighth Commonwealth Women's Affairs Ministers
Meeting on Thursday at Munyonyo.
Uganda is to host 53 Commonwealth heads of government in November.
Bbumba said the ministers had also appealed to the heads of government
to provide enough funds for implementing local, regional and international
agreements that focus on gender issues.
She added that the ministers would influence the Paris declaration
on new aid modalities during its review in Ghana next year.
The declaration is an international agreement to which over one
hundred ministers committed their countries to increase efforts
in harmonisation and managing aid with a set of monitorable actions.
