WAG Blasts Police
By Savious Kwinika
June 13, 2005 (Zimbabwe Standard)
The Women Action Group (WAG) has accused police officers in Beitbridge
of demanding sexual favours from commercial sex workers in exchange
for their release.
WAG says this fuels the HIV and Aids pandemic.
This was revealed at the commissioning of a $500 million Sexual
and Reproductive Health Rights Advocacy project sponsored by the
Canadian Embassy in Matabeleland South at Tongwe Business Centre
recently.
Edna Masiiwa, WAG director, said she had received complaints from
the organisation's members that police officers were demanding
sexual favours from commercial sex workers.
Masiiwa said: "We applaud the assistance we are getting from
the Canadian Embassy because most of these commercial sex workers
can be rounded up by the police, some forced into sexual relationships
after failing to raise the required fines."
