PeaceWomen monitors the work of the General Assembly primarily during its General Debate in September of each year, as well as during the meetings of the Third Committee, Social, Humanitarian and Cultural.
Tuesday September 13, 2011 marks the opening of the 66th General Assembly. The theme of the general debate will be "Strengthening the role of mediation in the peaceful settlement of disputes, conflict prevention and resolution.” The session will be presided by his Excellency Mr.Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser of Qatar. The main task at hand for this session is to strengthen mediation as a tool for conflict prevention and resolution.
The theme of this session is especially relevant to the Women, Peace and Security agenda which seeks to promote the participation of women in peace processes and negotiations. Gender oriented references are important to promote a more inclusive mediation process and a widened interpretation of security.
Peace Women will be monitoring gender references in the statements during the Assembly's General Debate. We will also provide basic documents and reports, outcome documents as well as interesting parallel events. For more information click on our 66th session section.
