Women often resist the return to traditional gender roles when their society is emerging from conflict; some seize the opportunity and advance gender equality. We highlight several outstanding examples in this edition of 1325 PeaceWomen E-News.
The General Assembly is the main deliberative, policymaking and representative organ of the United Nations. Established in 1945 under the Charter of the United Nations, the General Assembly meets intensively September to December each year and afterward as required to facilitate discussion on all international issues among all (currently 193) members.
On July 2, 2010 the General Assembly voted unanimously to create a dynamic new entity called UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women).
The Annual Session of UN Women's Executive Board will be held 27-30 June 2011.
Annual Executive Board Meeting and Strategic Plan
UN Women is governed by an Executive Board that oversees the organization's operational activities based on policy directions set by the UN General Assembly, ECOSOC and the Commission on the Status of Women. The Board engages with the executive boards of other UN development agencies to coordinate work on gender across the UN system.
On April 3rd 2011, UN Women Executive Director Ms. Michelle Bachelet visited the Dadaab refugee camp in northern Kenya while on a visit with UN World Food Programme Executive Director Ms. Josette Sheeran and UN High Commissioner for Refugees Mr. Antonio Guterres. During this visit, Ms. Bachelet raised concerns over insecurity facing Somali women and girls in refugee camps in Kenya.
On January 24th 2011, The launch event for UN Women, Honouring the Past – Envisioning the Future for Women and Girls, was hosted by Ms. Michelle Bachelet, Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director, UN Women. It was emceed by Ms. Juju Chang, news anchor of ABC's Good Morning America, with other distinguished speakers and performers.
